World info: Modern Earth, but magical creatures like undead and fairies are real. They hide their existence from normal humans. Magic is real and learnable, and religious faith also has power in it even if the believer in question has no aptitude with magic.
History: -Was born in the Middle Ages in the Caliphate of Cordoba as Kuni ben Monash, a Jewish poet.
-Attracted the attention of a wealthy patron, Salvador, and became his lover.
-Salvador (secretly a lich) tricked Kuni into drinking a potion that turned him into a lich as well. Kuni told Salvador he never wanted to see him again and fled.
-Spent the next thousand or so years hiding from human eyes and fleeing town whenever he was discovered to change his identity and start over again.
-Made the journey from Europe to North America in the colonial era.
-Currently living in an apartment in Washington D.C with the assumed name Gershom Alter, and has been there for several decades without stepping outside more than twice a year.
-Got a job writing articles for a Jewish website.
-In the future, Salvador will reappear and attempt to convince Gershom to let him into his apartment.
Canon point: 2020, having not met Salvador again yet.
Age: 1000+: he himself has lost track of his exact age.
Personality: It is impossible to describe Gershom without talking about his Jewishness. Gershom is as devout as he can be in his current state, and has been deeply devoted to his faith ever since he was alive (when wanting to be able to spend less time working and more time studying Torah was how Salvador tricked him into drinking the 'health elixir' in the first place.) His Judaism is also why he has never seriously considered learning magic to hide his appearance and fit in human society again: the Torah forbids spellcasting, so it's not an option.
Being turned into an undead creature against his will and then spending a thousand years with little to no human contact has done a number on his self-esteem. Gershom considers himself an abomination. Even if he were in a position to ask for help, he wouldn't feel that he deserved to be an imposition on anyone else's time. He's convinced himself that he has it pretty good, comparatively: he has the internet now, and he can talk to people over text, this is the best it's been for him in 1000 years. So what if he hasn't left his apartment in a decade?
Gershom loves learning. What happened with Salvador scarred him too badly to keep writing poetry, but he still reads as much as he can about anything he can.
He's badly starved for company and affection, and anyone showing him the slightest kindness will have a devoted friend for life. Especially if they're an attractive man, because Gershom's love life is the only thing more pathetic than his actual life.
Character changes: Pray that this man gets a sense of self-worth.
Capabilities: As a lich, he doesn't need to eat, sleep, or breathe, and he can't be killed as long as his phylactery (his tefillin) is intact. His true faith imbues a small amount of power in things that he believes have power, like his mezuzah that keeps malevolent people from entering his apartment.
